Why did the Marche du 1er mars take place in Neuchâtel?
Historical context
1 March marks an important date for the canto
n of Neuchâtel. This day commemorates the Neuchâtel Revolution of 1848. Before that date, the canton was a principality governed by the King of Prussia while also being part of Switzerland. The inhabitants overthrew the royal government and proclaimed the Republic. This political change made Neuchâtel a full citizen of modern Switzerland.
The Marche du 1er mars today
Every year on 1 March, hundreds of people gather to walk in the footsteps of the revolutionaries of 1848. The hike starts from villages such as Le Locle or Môtiers and ends at the Château de Neuchâtel. This route follows the historic path of the republican column.
The walk is not a competition. It is a symbolic and festive gathering. At each stage, participants take breaks with tea, taillaule (a local brioche) or soup.
Why this walk matters so much
It recalls a key moment in regional history.
It celebrates the canton's political freedom.
It strengthens the sense of belonging to the community.
It brings locals and visitors together around a living tradition.
